Hi.
We are just at the end of a 3 weeks tour in Myanmar, being back in Yangon for the second time to take our plane back home.
Our best place for lodging in town was indeed May Shan hotel: very central (close to Sule pagoda); nice rooms (modern & confort, AC, hot shower, sat tv, lift, good matress, quiet, nice and helpful owners).
When you come in Yangon do not hesitate to stay at May Shan, you will be delighted! Best ratio quality price in Yangon

Staying at the May Shan has been a great experience and couldn't have been a better start and end to my trip in Myanmar. The pleasant and friendly staff, the lovely clean room overlooking the Sule Paya, I couldn't have asked for more and am sorry to be leaving. I will definitely be back again in the near future.

We would just like to say THANK YOU!! so very much to May Shan Guest House for taking such wonderful care of us here in Yangon! You make us feel like family! The rooms are so very clean, the breakfast is delicious, and our laundry is always freshly pressed. We have been coming here for several years now and it just keeps getting nicer and nicer. Thank you for helping us with phone calls, and arranging bus tickets and just everything you do. But also THANK YOU for always smiling and being HAPPY!!
YOU ARE THE BEST!!
CHEERS, your friends,
Lois and Stephen Tonnison

As we return from our travels for the return flight, we are filled with happy Myanmar memories - and the Mayshan is still as welcoming. Prices are lower outside Yangon, don't worry - mostly we spent $10-15 a night in most places, and always had hot water and a bathroom.
Our recommendations : Inle Lake was our favourite place, where the people are so laid back they don't even chase to sell, and the weather is cooler, the scenery georgeous. if you go, the Gold Star Hotel is just like staying with friends (great room for 2 with hot water, aircon, fridge, TV for $15). It's one block south of the Independence monument. And for the best food in all of Myanmar, ShanLand is sensational. Don't miss their 'fried fish', 'Thai Soup', or 'Chicken with cashew nuts'. Mmmmmmm mmm. Look out for the longneck tribe, and don't miss the fab jumping cats monastery, where the local monk is a dude who calls himself Tony Blair.
Outside Inle area, the Lonely Planet will guide you. Bagan was a disappointment after all the hype, especially if you've had the bar raised by the likes of Angkor or Tikal, and I doubt anyone would want to spend more than one day there. But I could be wrong, I'm sure I'd have preferred it if i had had something to smoke!
Overall: Myanmar A+, Mayshan Hotel A+
